Renewal 。 Redemption 。 Transformation

Phil Hughes
Manchester, 1950 - Present

Phil Hughes is a studio-based painter in oils and acrylics whose main body of work revolves around images of people. He is motivated by the awareness that the most subtle brush strokes can completely transform a character’s perceived mood or personality. Faces and posture are so full of significance for us that a two-dimensional painted image instantly conveys so much: even the simplest portrait is rich in meaning. Phil’s object is to control the painting process to explore the drama and endless variations of mood, expression and personality we all present to the world, and he also strives to imbue his paintings and drawings with a degree of ambiguity: something unresolved. His usual working method is to get something down quickly and then work and rework it until the mood is achieved.
Phil Hughes' paintings have been shown in numerous UK exhibitions, including those of the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and the Mall Gallery in London.
